Google is apparently now testing new delivery and read status indicators for its Messages app. Last week, it released a new icon and previewed several upcoming features.

For now, those with RCS Chat can see whether their messages have been “Delivered” or not. If you see the word “Read,” that means your message has been delivered and read. These words appear below the last message you sent, between the time it was sent and a lock icon , which symbolizes end-to-end encryption ( E2EE).

Now, the app is testing a checkpoint system with three states that differ slightly between individual and group conversations.
In private conversations:
- 1 checkmark = Sent
- 2 checkmarks = Delivered
- 2 filled-in checkmarks = Read
When sending messages in a group chat:
- 1 checkmark = Sent
- 2 check marks = Delivered
- “Seen by [x]” or “Read by all” = Read
If it were just the first two check marks, it would be a pretty standard delivered/read messaging app (e.g. Signal and Telegram). iMessage uses text, which we think is the best approach. While people may be more familiar with check marks, being able to read the words “Delivered” and “Read” is less confusing.

The difference between two checkmarks and two filled-in checkmarks is an unnecessary complication. Google Messages should display an explanation before starting this test – if/when this feature expands.

Right now, it seems like Google is testing it out. The changes haven't been rolled out to all devices yet.
