Disney Avatar 2: Title and first trailer announced

As Disney announced yesterday at CinemaCon, the first Avatar sequel, to be called Avatar: The Way of Water, is a fact and perhaps the biggest indication yet that the film will finally be released on December 16. And we may have even more potential proof soon, as the first teaser trailer is set to debut alongside Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which premieres on May 6.

Disney has even given a short description of its new film, but it is quite vague:

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the family of Sally, Jake, Neytiri and their children, the problems that follow them, the efforts they make to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive and the tragedies they endure.

The phrase "the story begins" used by Disney in description suggests that The Way of Water isn't the only Avatar film to be released, and that we should expect more to come. Avatar 3, 4, and 5 are also in the works, each set to be released about two years after the previous one. At this point, we can't know much about the remaining sequels, but we hope they live up to the original film.

As director James Cameron always promised, Avatar 2 takes place in and around the ocean. Sully and Neytiri now have children. The sequel looks even more impressive in its deep blue visuals than the 2009 film. There are also plenty of new creatures: We see the Na'vi in flying creatures that look like both birds and fish at the same time, communicating with a whale and yet somehow being divided despite their affinity with nature. The aliens are divided and fighting against each other. It's truly a whole new world, raising the stakes of the previous original that won three Oscars in 2009.

The first Avatar came out in 2009 and remains one of the biggest box office hits of all time. But if you're a little confused about the details of the film, Disney is set to re-release Avatar in theaters on September 23rd.
