NASA's Mars Ingenuity helicopter recently completed its 23rd flight over the surface of the red planet, flying for 129.1 seconds over a distance of 358 meters.

The autonomous helicopter has survived almost a year on Mars, much longer than its original mission which was supposed to last just 31 days.
NASA's small aircraft, weighing about 2 kilograms, was originally scheduled for no more than five flights. However, so far, it has completed 23 flights, exceeding all expectations. It is now an operational tool, acting as an aerial reconnaissance vehicle for its companion Perseverance rover.
The latest milestone comes nearly a year after he completed his historic first flight, hovering over Mars' Jezero crater for 39.1 seconds.
Scientists believe that this location was once rich in water. Furthermore, it may have been an ideal place for living organisms, as the water may have been shallow and warm, according to their hypothesis.
In addition to this, the geological structure of this area was considered to be a perfect spot for emerging life. This led experts to believe that this particular location was once a place of residence for any form of life.

The Perseverance rover will need some help from the Ingenuity helicopter at this point, as in order to properly assess the entire area, it will need to traverse the rocky path slowly to avoid potential damage.
During its journey, the Ingenuity robot can act as Perseverance's eyes. It can spy on potential hazards that might hinder the rover's progress. It will also give the rover a clearer look at things that might spark some curiosity in scientists.
Ingenuity's mission has been extended until September 2022, allowing it to continue testing its limits in order to support the design of future Mars rovers.
" Less than a year ago, we didn't even know if controlled flight of a powered aircraft to Mars was possible ," Thomas Zurbuchen , associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said earlier this month . " Now, we look forward to Ingenuity's participation in Perseverance's second science campaign ."

To boost the chances of success, NASA's JPL is implementing software updates to improve operational flexibility and flight safety. NASA's Ingenuity crew, meanwhile, recently received the National Space Club & Foundation's Dr. Robert H. Goddard , which is given to an individual or team with pioneering achievements in space or aeronautics in the United States.
