Sony Interactive Entertainment has agreed to acquire American video game company Bungie for $3.6 billion. Bungie is a Washington-based video game developer behind popular games including Halo and Destiny.

Bungie was acquired by Microsoft in 2000, but in 2007 the game developer announced that it was being spun off from Microsoft and became a private independent company.
Now it seems that Sony has agreed to buy Bungie, following the example of Take-Two Interactive announcing its decision to acquire Zynga ($12.7 billion) and Microsoft joining forces with Activision Blizzard ($69 billion deal).
All three acquisition deals for video game companies were announced in January.

Recently, major technology companies have been showing increasing interest in the gaming sector as they try to attract more customers and prepare for the future, which will be dominated by virtual and augmented reality.
According to a statement, Bungie will continue to operate independently within Sony.
The video game developer's most recent success is Destiny 2, which will continue to be offered on multiple platforms.
“Bungie has created and continues to evolve some of the most beloved video game franchises, and by aligning its values with people’s desire to share gameplay experiences, it brings together millions of people around the world,” said Kenichiro Yoshida, president and CEO of Sony.

Sony Interactive Entertainment, which develops the PlayStation and is based in San Mateo, California, is a subsidiary of Sony Group Corp.
