Google Photos users on iPhone and iPad will soon be able to lock their most sensitive images in a special folder protected by a password, thanks to a new feature coming to the iOS app.

Currently, the privacy-focused 'Locked Folder' feature that's only available on Pixel allows users to store photos and videos in the app in a separate space that requires a password or fingerprint to access.

The media stored in the folder remain hidden, meaning that sensitive photos do not appear as users scroll in Google Photos or other apps on their device. Google says the feature will arrive on iOS «in the early part of next year».

It is important to note that, as it currently works on Pixel phones, any cloud backups of items placed in the ‘Locked Folder’ are automatically deleted from Google's servers.

Google advertises the photo and video backup service as «a safe home for life memories», thanks to «world‑class security» and the encryption it uses «to protect the photos you back up or share».

Despite these safeguards, last year Google was forced to contact around 100,000 users to inform them that some of their private videos backed up to servers had been accidentally sent to strangers due to a "technical issue."

Apple It does include an option to hide some photos from the main library in a "Hidden" folder that may indeed be hidden in the Photos app, but even so, the album is still visible when the image selector is used in third-party apps, so it's not completely invisible to prying eyes.
