Some reports earlier this year suggested that Samsung was looking to buy OLED panels from LG Display, which would fill a gap in Samsung’s recent use of QLED panels in high-end TVs. The reports, gathered by The Verge in April from various sources in Asia, indicated that Samsung would buy one million panels this year and another four million in 2022.
Now, it seems Samsung is denying these reports.
SamMobile reported that Samsung has officially denied these rumors. A Samsung executive speaking to Korean tech publication IT Chosun made it clear that this is not true.

“There is no change in the logic that our QLED TVs have better picture quality than OLED TVs. I am trying to make it clear that the rumors are unfounded,” the spokesperson said. “It is true that LCD prices are rising and we are facing a difficult situation, but we have enough capabilities to overcome the difficulties as the No. 1 company.”
Samsung is reportedly preparing to release a new form of TV called QD-OLED. A timeline suggests the first QD-OLED TVs will hit the market in 2022, which would indicate a presentation at CES next January.

QD-OLED technology is described in a recent report by Digital Trends as “a hybrid display technology that aims to take the already impressive properties of OLED TV and improve brightness and color through the use of quantum dots.” Samsung announced an $11 billion investment in the technology in 2019, and other reports have called for Samsung to license the technology to other TV makers.
