In 2020, Slack added the ability to update our profiles with photos that appear on both our profile and in our DMs. If you're not particularly fond of them, there's a button that turns off profile pictures in DMs. See below for how to remove people's avatars from your DM list.

Before Slack added profile pictures to the list of users in your DMs, the list only displayed names and a circle indicating whether the user was online.

After Slack added profile photos, the list became colorful, but it was much harder to see whether the people you were communicating with were online or not.

Fortunately, Slack has a toggle in the settings that allows you to enable or disable profile pictures.
Start by opening Slack on your Windows 10 PC or Mac . (The setting is not available on mobile for Android, iPhone, or iPad .) With the client open, click your profile picture in the top-right corner of Slack, then select “Preferences.”

Click on “Sidebar” on the left and uncheck the “Show profile photos next to DMs” checkbox.

You're done! Close the preferences panel and your DMs will be photo-free again. Repeat these steps if you want to re-enable profile pictures in your DMs.
