Microsoft has resolved a known issue leading to “lost” system and user certificates after updating some Windows 10 systems.
The Windows 10 lost certificate issue affects both client (Windows 10 1903 or later) and server (Windows Server 1903 or later) platforms in managed environments.
Appears on devices that have been upgraded using outdated packages via update management tools (e.g. Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, physical media, or ISO images).
Computers updated through Windows Update or Windows Update for Business are not affected, as they always receive the latest functional updates.
The issue has been resolved
The Windows 10 lost certificate issue is now resolved “when you use the latest feature released on November 9, 2020, for Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager,” Microsoft says.
“For information about verifying that you are using the latest feature update packages, see this section.”
“If you are using or creating custom media, you must include an update released on or after October 13, 2020.”
The updated media to address this issue is not yet available for Windows 10 20H2 in the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) and Visual Studio subscriptions – Microsoft says it will be available in the coming weeks.
Solution available
Microsoft is also providing a solution for environments where the feature update packages released earlier this month cannot be deployed immediately.
To do this, you will need to downgrade to a previous version of Windows 10 using the instructions available here.
“The uninstall window may be 10 or 30 days depending on your environment configuration and the version you are updating to,” says Redmond.
"You should then update to the latest version of Windows 10 after the issue is resolved in environment ."
