European exchange company discovers hackers stole $1.6 million

A small exchange company in Slovakia revealed that hackers managed to break into its wallets and steal approximately $1.6 million in various cryptocurrencies.

Eterbase announced on its Telegram on Tuesday that so-called “hot wallets” for six of its listed cryptocurrencies had been compromised.

On Monday night, hackers stole Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Tezos, Algorand , and TRON, transferring the funds to public wallets that have since been emptied. At current prices, the stolen amount is worth almost $1.6 million.

Eterbase shared the wallet addresses on its corporate Telegram channel, but withheld further details until its investigation into the attack is complete.

Based in Bratislava, Slovakia, Eterbase lists multiple euro trading pairs against a range of DeFI-related fiat and digital assets.

According to CoinGecko, the exchange averages about $3 million in daily trading volume.

The company has contacted the authorities and transactions and withdrawals have been suspended until September 10.

CoinDesk asked Ethereum if it would compensate users affected by the hack, but did not receive a response.
