It seems that the Galaxy Fold, Samsung 's $1,980 foldable smartphone , is doing quite well in sales.
As Samsung Electronics President Young Sohn said at TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin, the company has “sold a million of these products.”
“There are a million people who want to use this $2,000 product,” he said. “We sold a million products.”.
When asked if company feels comfortable selling a betafor the astronomical sum of almost $2,000, Sohn replied that "it's still a pretty good device in my opinion" and explained that making the Fold available to consumers gives the company the necessary feedback to improve it.
“This is gen 1 and this product will only get better, thinner and lighter, with longer battery,” he said.
The Galaxy Fold was originally scheduled to be released in April 2019, but was canceled after users reported numerous issues with their control units. After several delays, a refreshed version of the Fold finally launched in September.
Users seem to be particularly pleased with the Fold's cooling factor and foldable display, but most noted that the software still needs a lot of work, among other issues.
However, despite the above issues, there seems to be a lot of interest in the Fold. Selling 1 million units in a span of 3 months is a respectable number. It may not be the company's main source of revenue, but it is still an expensive device.
Samsung is reportedly planning to launch another foldable phone next February, but it will be more affordable. A more complete and advanced successor to the Galaxy Fold is also expected to be released later in 2020.
