Windows Recovery Environment activation – deactivation

The Windows Recovery Environment (Windows Recovery Environment or simply WinRE) is a set of troubleshooting tools available in the Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10. These tools are useful if your operating system has a problem that you cannot repair from the regular Windows 10 environment.

For example, you may need to delete some files that seem to be in use by your operating system. It's a great alternative to using a bad bootable DVD or USB stick.

By default, the Windows Recovery Environment is available in the Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 10.

The Windows Recovery Environment includes the following tools:

Automatic Startup Recovery. If the system detects a startup failure on your computer, it will take you directly to Windows RE.
Automatic Repair. The Automatic Repair tool automates common tasks to diagnose and repair problems with your operating system.
System Image Recovery.
System Restore.
Command Prompt.
Ability to customize startup settings.
The tools may also include some custom support tools from the OEM.

Below we will see how you can disable WinRE, because for example you want to prevent your family members from using these tools incorrectly.

Open a Command Prompt window as Administrator (search for cmd, right-click on the icon and open as administrator).
Type or copy-paste the following command: reagentc /info and press Enter to run it.
Check the value next to Windows RE status. It should say Enabled or Disabled.
