Disney: Creating the perfect digital teeth requires something that resembles a medieval torture device. Graphics in video games and movies have become very realistic, and the methods used are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
Below we will see what Disney researchers are doing in their attempt to create the perfect digital teeth.
“The ideal appearance of teeth depends on the social and cultural context of the subject, as well as their age,” Disney researchers report in a paper titled Appearance Capture and Modeling of Human Dental.
"We present a system specifically designed to capture the optical properties of human teeth so that they can be realistically reproduced in computer graphics.".
To record what the teeth and oral cavity look like, Disney researchers needed volunteers who had to remain still as 54 different lights were flashed on their faces, while a camera continuously took pictures.
"To accomplish this, we have a stabilizing neck brace, a head strap, and a rigid object to bite on, which also helps to separate the upper and lower jaws," the paper states.
“To minimize facial occlusion, we retract the lips and cheeks using an OptraGate lip retractor.”.

The visual effect of this tool, so elegantly described in scientific language, looks like it came out of a horror movie.
But once the researchers have their data, they run it through a complex series of mathematical equations to match their digital models to the volunteer's real teeth. Once this process is complete, the digital chompers can be processed and incorporated into movies and video games.
