10MB disk from the 60s

10MB disk with incredible size: Hard drives have gone through many stages to reach the point we know today. Imagine that we only reached the 1 terabyte capacity milestone in 2007, which took 51 years. 2 terabytes came much faster, in 2009, which took only 2 years.

This difference gives us an idea of the pace of development of digital storage technology, which essentially began in 1956.

But the evolution of capacity is not the only impressive element, since there have been very significant changes in the size and price of hard drives.

Until 1957, data was stored on tape. That's when IBM first introduced the 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) hard drive. It consisted of 50 platters, was 24 inches in diameter, and had a total capacity of 5 MB, a huge capacity for the time.

The disk cost $35,000 a year (rent because IBM didn't sell the disk) and was twice the size of a refrigerator.

The first model, which used "Float on air" technology in the read/write head, was called the Winchester 3030 (because the technology was developed in Winchester, England). This particular disk had two sides, each of which could store 30 MB!

The following disk that we are showing today, presented by Dr John E Kelly III, is a 10MB hard drive. It was manufactured in 1960.
