If you use the Linux Mint distribution, you will be happy to know the following news. The upcoming Linux Mint 19.1 “Tessa” release, which will be released around Christmas, will come with an updated desktop environment.

It will be running the latest Cinnamon 4.0. The distribution, like every update, will of course bring many additional improvements to other parts of the operating system.
The official announcement states the following:
Cinnamon 4.0 will look much more modern thanks to a new panel layout. Whether you use the new look, or the old one, we want you to feel at home in your new operating system. You will have the option to switch desktop environment versions with a single click, and you will be able to make Cinnamon exactly the way it was before.
So according to the developers you will have the option to choose between the traditional panel or the modern look. The modern version of the panel includes the following icons and features:
40px icons
24px icons for the system tray
and windows will be grouped by application
In addition to all of the above regarding the appearance of the upcoming operating system, the development team also added support for mainline kernels within the Update Manager.
