reCAPTCHA v3: Google announced today an update for the reCAPTCHA technology that it has offered since 2007 to combat bots on the worldwide web.
reCAPTCHA v3, therefore, is the new version and constitutes a complete update of the reCAPTCHA technology we have known so far.
The good news is that the new system will no longer require any interaction from the user. You will, of course, remember the early days of reCAPTCHA v1, when everyone tried to read a distorted text, or the days of v2, when we tried to find “storefront windows”, “road signs” and “cars” for 1-2 minutes.
reCAPTCHA v3 will use a new secret and proprietary technology from Google to distinguish bots from normal traffic, “observing” the behavior of a website’s users.
Google reports that by observing how regular users interact on a page and its sections, it will be able to detect strange behaviors, bots or unwanted actions.
New visitors will receive “risk scores” based on their source of arrival or the actions they will take on a website. The scores will start from 0,1 (bad) and will reach 1 (good). According to the company, website administrators will be able to decide how their site reacts based on the above score.
The whole system is much more complex compared to reCAPTCHA v2, but website administrators had plenty of time to test version 3 during a beta period that started last May.
The biggest advantage of reCAPTCHA v3 is that website owners can now control and decide how their pages will react to bots and will not allow Google to make these decisions on its own, as was done with versions 1 and 2.
reCAPTCHA v3 will be available to everyone later this week. More information in official announcement .
