Netflix is reportedly testing a new feature that inserts video ads between episodes of shows you’re watching. Naturally, many of the users who participated in the company’s tests were outraged.
Unlike some streaming services, like The Roku Channel, which offers free movies with ads, Netflix charges for everything, because no one likes ads interrupting the program.
According to TechCrunch, Netflix is currently testing ads that will show its own series between episodes. Lucky people who took part in the “experiment” without meaning to, report that after an episode ends, a Netflix Original video is shown. But the company gives the user the right to skip it.
Although these video ads can be skipped, they are still an unnecessary addition to an already paid service. Ad-free shows are one of the main reasons to subscribe to Netflix.
Netflix, on the other hand, announced: “We are testing whether showing recommendations between episodes helps members discover new shows faster. It is important to note that a member can skip the video at any time if they are not interested.”
Netflix said that it conducts “hundreds of tests each year to better understand what helps its members find what to watch more easily.”
So the company believes that video promos will help “find something you will like faster.”
Netflix’s intentions may of course be very different, as the company spends a lot of money on producing new shows.
But after complaints on social media, and from various publications, it is likely that the tests will stop. However, the service is sure to continue to push users to attract more to watch more Netflix Originals.
