Audacity is a free, cross-platform audio application for recording and editing audio files. The application is cross-platform and thus available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and BSD.
Audacity was created by Dominic Mazzoni while he was a student at Carnegie Mellon University. Mazzoni now works at Google but remains the main maintainer of the project with the help of many people from around the world.
Audacity won a SourceForge.net Community Choice Award for Best Multimedia Program in 2007.
The application can, among other things, record live audio via a microphone or mixer, and digitize recordings from other sources. With some sound cards and on any recent version of Windows, Audacity can also record streaming audio.
Some of Audacity's features are:
- Import and export WAV, AIFF, MP3 files (via the LAME codec which must be downloaded and installed separately), Ogg Vorbis, all file types supported by the libsndfile library.
- Versions 1.2.5, 1.3.2 and later also support Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC).
- Version 1.3.6 and later support additional file types such as WMA, AAC, AMR, and AC3 from the FFmpeg library.
- Recording and playing audio files.
- Edit sounds via Cut , Copy , Paste functions with unlimited Undo .
- Mixing of many different audio channels.
- Digital audio effects capabilities and installation of additional features (plug-ins). Additional effects can be written in the Nyquist language.
- Waveform intensity processing.
- Noise removal.
- Spectral audio processing using the Fourier transform algorithm.
- Multi-channel support with sampling rates up to 96Khz with 32bits per sample.
- Ability to make detailed adjustments to the speed of audio playback while keeping the pitch-tempo of frequencies constant. Such a function can be used to synchronize audio with moving images.
- Ability to change rhythm-tone (pitch-tempo frequencies) without changing the playing speed.
- Support for modern multi-channel audio editing software features including navigation, zoom, Copy-Cut-Paste, etc.
- Automatic conversion of analog cassettes to digital format. The built-in algorithm for finding pauses between tracks is used to save each track-song in a separate file.
- Ability to install on different operating systems such as: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Unix systems such as Linux – BSD).
- The latest stable version supports Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista, but Windows 95 and NT are not supported. For Windows 7 support, the developers recommend the latest beta version 1.3.x Beta.
- Audacity uses the wxWidgets software library so that the interface is similar when running on different operating systems.
Audacity can be used for post-processing many types of audio files and podcasts. It can be used to complete podcasts by adding effects such as volume normalization, track trimming, volume control (fade-in/fade-out).
