According to a recent report, two major technology companies, Microsoft and Intel, are joining forces to set some standards for foldable laptops.
Microsoft is already working with Intel to set standards for dual-screen laptops, which are devices that feature a second screen above the keyboard. Many people still don't understand exactly what it's for, but a second screen could be especially useful for video creators and gamers.
For example, Intel itself showed off its Honeycomb Glacier prototype, while Microsoft is working on a foldable Surface that has been rumored for some time.
Regarding the standards the companies want to establish for foldable computers, there is still no information. Perhaps Microsoft and Intel want to propose specifications concerning the processor (x86 or ARM), the minimum battery life, stylus support, etc.
Are there foldable laptops?
Lenovo one that has shown off the most realistic concept of a foldable computer so far, earlier this year. It features a 13-inch 2K OLED LCD display and folds like a book, creating a crease along the length of the screen.
With the keyboard removed from the device, the most important part seems to be the user interface. The software of such a device must function like the touchscreen on a smartphone or tabletin order to be easy to use.
Anyway, creating standards for a field that hasn't been developed yet seems like a somewhat rushed move. Foldable devices that are available to the public do not yet exist on the horizon, and even the dual-screen options that are available have a high cost for the average consumer.
