The President of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, accused WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange of violating the terms of his asylum, at the Embassy of South America in London.
The 47-year-old Assange lived in the Ecuadorian embassy for almost seven years. During his stay there, he made an agreement regarding the conditions of his asylum, which he violated, according to Moreno.
Moreno, giving an interview on a radio show, said that Assange does not have the right to “hack personal accounts or phones.” He is also not allowed to interfere in the politics of other countries.
According to the president, this is not the first time Assange has violated the terms of his asylum. He is not prohibited from expressing himself freely, but he is not allowed to tell lies and to invade personal data, such as mobile phones and accounts.
Moreno said that some old photos, which showed him and his family in Europe, were leaked to the press. Moreno himself did not openly blame Assange for this leak, but his government believes that WikiLeaks is behind the release of the photos.
President Moreno will soon make a decision on how to handle the Assange case after reported that Moreno has an offshore account in Panama. Moreno denies the allegations and says they have no basis.
According to the foreign minister of Ecuador, José Valencia, the living conditions of Assange had been shaped based on international law. Since Assange violated them, the asylum agreement can be broken. However, Moreno himself has not yet announced whether he will expel Assange from the embassy or not.
