GoPro: Fusion VR camera gets improved via software update

GoPro has released beta firmware that will allow its camera to capture 5.6K spherical video at 24 frames per second. It's not a huge change, as the original was already 5.2K, but it's still remarkable given the limitations of a VR headset.

GoPro's goal is to enable customers to shoot at 5.8K while still producing a complete video. The most impressive thing about this whole change is that GoPro will be upgrading the camera's resolution through software, something we don't often hear from similar companies.

In terms of details, GoPro's firmware adds support for time-lapses in the corresponding mode and there's support for RAW photos for both time-lapses and night mode. Corresponding upgrades to Fusion Studio software on your computer will provide you with improved image quality and better integration with Adobe 2019 versions.

The software-based camera resolution upgrade came as a pleasant surprise to GoPro customers, but the beta sends a message that GoPro is still committed to delivering a VR video camera. Of course, that's not surprising, given that company CEO Nick Woodman confirmed a Fusion 2 VR camera during a party at the well-known CES 2019.
