Raspberry Pi gets touchscreen support with Linux 4.21

The Raspberry Pi touchscreen will now be supported in the mainline Linux kernel . On Wednesday, official support for the 7-inch, 800×480 touchscreen for the Raspberry Pi was added.touchscreen

Until now, touchscreen support has been provided with the help of custom Linux kernels for Raspbian, a Debian-based operating system intended exclusively for Raspberry Pi devices or devices with a custom kernel.

Now that the Raspberry Pi has received touchscreen support ,it can be used to develop DIY tablets and other devices that require a touchscreen interface.

The changes were pushed to the Linux 4.21 kernel, along with 200+ lines of input driver code. The driver will obtain information from a memory mapped area, via the Raspberry Pi firmware.

The 7-inch touch screen for the Raspberry Pi enables users to undertake comprehensive projects, including entertainment systems, embedded projects and tablets, among others.

According to the recently updated product page on the official Raspberry Pi site, drivers for the touchscreenwith 10-finger touch support and on-screen keyboard will be integrated into the latest Raspbian OS for full functionality without a keyboard or mouse.

The 7-inch touch screen for the Raspberry Pi is priced at $60.
