Just a few days ago, Microsoft released an emergency patch for Internet Explorer, which is part of an update. The update was created to fix a zero-day vulnerability in Internet Explorer, first discovered by Google security researcher, @_clem1.
However, it appears that the patch creates more problems than it fixes. Among the many known issues it causes, as Microsoft noted in the changelog, one can be considered more serious than the others, as it renders many Lenovo laptops unable to boot after the patch is installed.
Microsoft says the issue only affects users who have a Lenovo laptop running Windows 10 and have less than 8GB of RAM . On the other hand, a few sources say the issue has only affected PCs still running version 1607 or the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (2016).
Considering that only enterprise computers have the ability to delay updates, they have likely been affected by the issue that causes boot failure.
If you have installed the latest updated version “KB4467691” on your computer and are experiencing the same issue, the following steps are recommended by Microsoft:
- Restart the affected machine using UEFI.
- After that, disable Secure Boot and then restart.
- If BitLocker is enabled on your computer, you may need to perform BitLocker recovery after disabling Secure Boot.
