New data from the Pew Research Center in America highlights the advantages and disadvantages of YouTube and urges users to be particularly careful with the content they watch. According to a survey conducted in the US, based on 4,594 adults, it was found that users use this entertainment platform to obtain information about almost everything.
YouTube is the most popular choice for everyone to discover things they have never seen or done before. Specifically, 87% of people responded that this particular social networking site is important for acquiring new skills and developing as individuals. Unfortunately, however, the majority of users reported that they have been exposed to incorrect and disturbing videos at times when they visit the platform. The content of these videos is completely fake and is something that is encountered quite often. Indeed, this is the biggest problem for YouTube, as the main reason for the increase in visits is for users to understand what is happening in the world.
The problem was brought to light a few months ago when a trending video promoting a conspiracy theory about the students who were victims of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida was released. The video contained disturbing footage but was soon taken down by the platform due to copyright infringement.
For some time now, YouTube has been trying to tackle fake content and "annoying" users who continue to misinform the public and violate the company's terms. It should be noted that efforts are constantly being made to take stricter oversight and security measures.
