A phishing scam has appeared recently, impersonating Adidas, which promises users a free pair of shoes.
The organizers of the fake campaign lure their victims by saying that Adidas is celebrating its 69thbirthday and giving away 2,500 pairs of shoes for free. The website address looks real, but it is not, as a similar character is used in place of the i.
Researchers said that a very good job has been done on the page to make it look authentic, as even the page redirects based on the user's location work just like on Adidas's official page.
When the user visits the site, they undergo some tests such as location verification via their IP and a check whether the device is a mobile phone or a computer. Then they are redirected to the form with the 4 questions, which informs them that they are entitled to a free pair of shoes regardless of their answers. At the end of the survey the user must share the page with a friend via the WhatsApp app (even though the page does not perform a check to see if the user actually shared the page).
Finally, a redirection occurs to another address, where the user must enter their card details to complete the process. Below the details field, it is noted in small print that if the trial service is not cancelled within 7 days of the user's registration, a charge of $50 per month will commence.
As expected, victims never get the pair they think they won. Researchers are warning people to be wary of these types of scams and asking users not to hesitate to report new scams they spot.
