Russia is fighting to ban the Telegram app in the country because it doesn't allow access to its users' conversations, even after a law enforcement order. This time, Russia is making a request to Apple to help with its issue.
Essentially, Apple was asked to block push notifications from Telegram users in Russia, in an attempt to limit the service's functionality on iOS devices.
Roskomnadzor believes that if users do not receive notifications when someone sends them messages on Telegram, sooner or later the application will lose its appeal.
Russia has reportedly blocked access to Telegram in the past, but many local users bypassed the restriction by switching to VPN services or proxy servers to connect to the service.
On the other hand, many companies support Telegram's Russian founder, Pavel Durov, to keep the platform running.
Apple has a month to respond to the request and so far has not made any statement regarding Russia's attempt to block Telegram.
This is not the first time Russia has asked Apple for support on this issue. In April 2018, shortly after Telegram was banned in the country, the telecommunications regulator demanded that a number of companies, including Apple and Google, remove the app from their local app stores.
Meanwhile, Russia is also in discussions with Google to further restrict Android users' access to Telegram.
