You can now officially run Linux apps on Chrome OS

Linux

Google's move to launch more affordable Chromebooks has greatly increased competition for Microsoft and Apple. It seems that Google is now targeting the development space, where we've already seen different approaches from all three companies when it comes to running Linux applications on their platforms.

Chrome OS will no longer be seen as a more idealized version of the Chrome browser and is ready to take on a different role. Google is now officially introducing support for Linux applications on Chrome OS. From now on, the company will ship Chrome OS with a custom Debian Stretch virtual machine.

Now, with a single option in the settings menu, you will be able to install and run Linux applications. The installation process will be the usual one, that is, using apt-get or other similar commands.

As work on Linux apps on Chrome OS is still in its early stages, this feature is only available on the Google Pixelbook for now. Over time, this feature is expected to expand to more devices.

Linux

Linux is a free and open-source operating system that is widely used on various computing devices. It was first released in 1991 by Linus Torvalds and has since grown to be one of the most popular operating systems in the world. Linux is known for its stability, security, and flexibility, making it a preferred choice for many individuals and organizations.

One of the key features of Linux is its open-source nature, meaning that its source code is freely available for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. This has led to a large community of developers constantly improving and updating the software, making it more secure, reliable, and feature-rich.
