Microsoft's Maps app for Windows 10 suffers from an outdated content problem, which in the past has raised questions about how committed the company is to keeping its mapping solutions up to date.
While many claimed that Microsoft could even abandon these apps, a company spokesperson finally explained why sometimes outdated maps are discovered in Bing Maps and the Windows 10 Maps app, emphasizing that the company is in no way considering abandoning them.
Microsoft told AAWP that it takes longer to process the map data provided by HERE, and depending on how large the update is, the new content may reach some users a little slower than expected. A new update is scheduled to be released this summer, the company spokesperson said.
“I would like to give you some details about what we are doing and how we will evolve this in the future. As you have indicated, in some cases our map data is outdated. As you know, we obtain the base map data from HERE and then process this data to integrate it into Bing Maps and the Windows Map App. Occasionally, this process experiences delays. However, we are working to accelerate data processing and expect a new update to be available this summer,” he said.
"We continue to invest in our maps and will continue to improve our data as we go. Hopefully, in the not-so-distant future, these types of delays will be a thing of the past.".
Such an announcement can only be seen as positive, especially for Windows 10 mobile users who do not wish to switch to a different platform, as their options are limited when it comes to mapping solutions.
Of course, using Google Maps through a browser is not the most convenient solution, and the fact that Microsoft offers outdated maps is one reason that led many to believe that the company intends to abandon the project, thus giving users yet another reason to switch to Android or iOS.
