Chrome users who routinely stream audio and video files to Chromecast or similar Cast devices will soon experience a simpler and more accessible method of streaming.
Chromium evangelist François Beaufort shared details about the new project investigating an easier method for streaming local audio and video files to Cast devices like Chromecast, which is currently available for testing in the Chrome OS Beta channel.
According to the developer, the new casting experience that Google plans to add to Chrome with the next stable release, Chrome 66, is actually a new “Cast file” action implemented in the Google Cast Extension window. To use it, all you have to do is run Chrome with the switch –enable-features=EnableCastLocalMedia.
If you want to use the new casting feature in Chrome, you will first need to install the latest beta version, for GNU/ Linux, macOS , and Windows systems via our web portal. Then, you will need to run Chrome Beta with the switch –enable-features=EnableCastLocalMedia.
Once you have Chrome Beta running with the corresponding switch, you can click on the “Cast…” menu entry or the Cast icon in your web browser, then click on the down arrow next to the “Cast to” entry and finally on “Cast file” to select the local audio or video file you want to cast. This way the Cast device will immediately receive the file you want to cast.
