If you've ever wanted to use the free LineageOS operating system for smartphones and tablets on your Raspberry Pi 3 mini PC (SBC), there's now an unofficial version available for public testing.
Finnish developer KonstaT today released the first build of LineageOS 15.1 for the Raspberry Pi 3 SBC, based on Google. It is powered by the Linux 4.4.119 LTS kernel compiled with GCC 4.9 and includes the February 2018 Android security patch.
Designed for advanced users only, this LineageOS port for the Raspberry Pi 3 uses Google's SwiftShader software renderer by default, which means that display performance may be disrupted. Also, the developer does not recommend this initial build for any production, nor for any device intended for media consumption.
“This build of LineageOS 15.1 for Raspberry Pi 3 is unofficial and not supported by the LineageOS team. It is intended for experienced developers only. The build currently uses Google's SwiftShader software renderer, so rendering performance is likely not what you would expect,” its creator said.
You can now install LineageOS on your Rasberry Pi 3
Without further ado, if you want to install and run LineageOS on your Raspberry Pi 3, you can download the Konsta build from website . The file is about 300 MB in size and contains an image of about 4.3 GB in size, which you will need to write to an SD card to boot it on your Raspberry Pi 3.
The developer doesn't provide installation instructions yet, but offers a quick FAQ for early adopters on how to enable root access, find developer options and performance settings, and reboot mode. He also promised to release the source code of the LineageOS for the Raspberry Pi 3 on GitHub.
