Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5: Red Hat Inc. announced the general availability of the beta release of the upcoming operating system Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5, which will be released in early spring.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 is the fifth release update in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 operating system series and brings with it another level of security and performance as well as new features and enhancements that will benefit enterprise customers across desktops, servers and cloud infrastructures.
As expected, Red Hat delivers the latest remediation measures for the security vulnerabilities Meltdown and Specter with the latest RHEL 7. Additionally, the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 release promises to continue supporting alternative architectures beyond the x86 and x86_64 platforms, including IBM Power, IBM System z and ARM.
The new security features applied in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 Beta release include integration of Red Hat Ansible Automation with OpenSCAP as well as support for more secure unlocking of encrypted network devices during the boot process and failover introduction with NTP and PTP connection interlinks.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 Beta also introduces the virtual data optimizer (VDO) technology, which is designed to reduce data redundancy through compression, a feature that could lead to massive cost reductions for active storage and the storage of monthly snapshots. Red Hat says that their preliminary testing showed an increase in actual capacity of up to 6 times when VDO was used in a storage environment with RHEL.
Finally, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 Beta enhances the usability for Linux and Windows administrators, as well as for developers seeking self-service capabilities, by implementing an easier way to use the Cockpit admin console and a new method for automatic creation of bootable snapshots, increasing the speed of recovery and rollback after a security code update. Red Hat Enterprise 7.5 Beta is now available for download from the Red Hat customer portal.
