Ever since Apple removed the headphone jack from iPhones, there's been some concern every time another brand launches a wireless phone.
For a long time now, people have been accusing manufacturers of removing the jack in order to sell extra expensive Bluetooth headphones.
The same thing happened with Razer, which recently released its first smartphone. Users said it did this so they could sell their $79.99 USB-C headphones or their $99.99 Bluetooth headphones.
However, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan revealed that removing the headphone jack gave the phone a very respectable 500mAh increase in battery capacity.
The big phone has a massive 4,000mAh battery, which is undoubtedly necessary to support the intense performance and refresh rate of the 120Hz display. (For reference, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has a 3,330mAh battery).
Tan said in a Facebook post that the extra space created by removing the jack allowed phone makers to improve their heat dissipation for better performance.
In response to a commenter on the post above, Tan added that "every millimeter counts" in the phone's packaging components. The jack is a "BIG component," he said.
With the headphone jack, the phone "would be significantly larger," he said.
In fact, in another comment where someone complained about the audio experience without headphones and suggested making the phone waterproof, Tan responded sarcastically, saying: "Maybe the Razer Phone isn't for you. Choose one that accepts headphones and has a small battery so you can carry the charger with you.".
