Redmond is reportedly developing a new technology for its browser that will cover users' tracks after visiting websites with inappropriate content. The new feature is expected to be integrated into the Windows Edge browser.
Surely no one visits websites with inappropriate content, right? Right. But let's assume that some of us do, and in that case, it goes without saying that we need specialized browsing tools to cover our tracks.
Microsoft seems to be working on this specific subject these days, as the company is reportedly developing a new technology for its Edge browser that will allow the browser to automatically erase all traces left behind from loading certain websites on a specific computer.
In a patent filed by the company and titled “Automation of browsing mode switching,” Microsoft explains that this feature would essentially allow the browser to automatically activate “private mode” whenever it detects a website that should not leave traces on the system, including websites with adult content.
And although this feature is currently in an experimental stage, it is possible that it will be implemented soon, with Microsoft providing more information on how this feature works and how to activate automatic switching to private mode.
“Some websites contain content that a user may not want associated with their identity or device. As such, many browsers include some kind of incognito browsing feature, which allows a user to view a website while minimizing the data retained that could be used to indicate that the user visited that website. However, typical implementations of this feature require the user to proactively initiate private mode in a browser before visiting any website that they wish to have their tracks erased from a device,” the company says.
“This document discusses techniques that can be used to automatically switch between different browsing modes, such as switching between normal browsing mode and private browsing mode.”
As is usually the case with patents, there is no certainty that the functions described will have practical application, so we will have to wait and see if Microsoft will implement this feature in any of the future versions of its browser.
