Apple recently received patents for a strap design that would allow the Apple Watch to perfectly hug the wrist.
Although at first glance this new feature doesn't seem to have any real benefit, in essence it is an application that helps both users and Apple itself get the most out of the Apple Watch.
The new Apple Watch could be adjusted without the user even having to touch the band. This also allows the watch to provide more accurate readings by always having the device fit perfectly on the wrist, which allows for better heart rate and movement tracking.
Apple's Patent No. 9,781,984 for dynamic fit adjustment in wearable devices explains that various self-adjusting strap systems were examined, including one that uses the clasp to automatically engage and push the band.
A second application relies on an integrated memory cable which in turn would use aerobic or fluid bladders to control the shape of the strap and adapt it to the user's wrist.
Whichever direction Apple, there are two options: either automate the strap by automatically detecting the wrist and adjusting accordingly, or offer several preset settings on the watch and let users choose what is best for them.
Note that, as with all patents, there is no guarantee that this technology could reach production, but Apple seems quite positive.
