Your Android is the thing you spend most of your time with. It has become more and more powerful over the years, achieving processing capabilities that are on par with desktop computers. But the one thing it suffers from is battery life.
The solution to improving Android battery performance is through software-side manipulations.
- Minimize vibrations and haptic feedback
Go to Settings >> Sound. You can turn off vibration on touch and other options if you don't need them. Custom keyboard apps provide additional settings to turn off vibration while typing.
- Screen optimization
The screen consumes a lot of battery power. Go to Settings >> Display. There you can adjust the Brightness as it drains the battery. Keeping the brightness adjusted will help you improve battery life. Set the sleep option to one minute or less. This reduces the time the screen stays on after you stop using the phone, thus saving battery. Use dark wallpapers and dark themes or night mode if possible. Many apps also have a night mode option in them. Apart from improving battery performance, it is also good for your eyes. If you have the “Proximity Wake” option, you can disable it to increase battery life.
- Turn off animations
Animations are another factor that affects battery life. To manage animations, you need to access “Developer option” in your Settings. Go to the “Settings” app on your phone. If you don’t find Developer option, go to Settings >> About phone and tap on “Build number” a few times. Go back to Settings and you will find ‘Developer option’. Tap on it and there you will find three options: Window animation scale’, ‘Transition animation scale’ and ‘Animator duration scale.’ Disable them and you will see a significant change in performance and improved battery life.
- Turn off wireless services when you are not using them
Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth when you are not using them. Also, turn on GPS only when needed and turn it off when you are not using it. When you are traveling for long hours, your phone will constantly change the base station from which it receives a signal, resulting in faster battery drain. So, use it in airplane mode if you are not expecting calls and want to listen to music for long hours.
- Turn off auto-sync and background data
Various sync processes run in the background of your phone and therefore consume battery. Go to Settings >> Accounts. Find the sync services in your accounts and disable unnecessary ones. Many apps continue to consume mobile data while running in the background, which in turn harms battery life. Go to Settings >> Data usage, click on apps that don't need to run in the background and click 'Restrict background app data' to limit background data usage when not in use.
- Clear recent apps and use fewer widgets
Close an app as soon as you’re done with it, or it will continue to run in the background. Just pressing the “back” button may not end the app. Keep clearing the “recent” panel frequently. The widgets that appear on the home screen are constantly updated to display new content. So, to increase battery life, keep your widgets to a minimum.
- Google App Optimization
Google Assistant is an amazing service, but the voice recognition feature can keep detecting 'OK Google' and therefore drain your battery a lot. If you are not a frequent user of Google Assistant, disabling it is a good option. Go to the Google app, click on Settings >> Voice >> Detect “OK Google” and from there you can disable the voice recognition feature to increase battery life.
- Manage your apps
Keep only the apps you use frequently. Keeping too many apps can slow down your phone and reduce battery life. You can see how much battery an app is using by going to Settings > Battery. Uninstall apps that use more battery. Try using the lite version of the apps you need.
- Turn off notifications for apps
Go to Settings >> Notification. Turn off the notification for an app by clicking on it and selecting “Block all.” This will stop the processor from checking the app every now and then, thus making your phone’s battery life longer.
- Use Greenify
Greenify saves your battery life by putting apps into a kind of “hibernation” mode. Not only does it stop an app from running in the background, it also prevents the app from launching until you open it again. Simply select the apps you want to hibernate and watch your battery life and performance improve.
