Nokia Mercury: In 2014, when Microsoft took over Nokia's devices and services unit, the merger included the elimination of many devices such as tablets, smartphones and wearables that were to be released by the company in collaboration with the Redmond software.
One of the tablets is the Nokia Mercury, which was designed by Nokia and was expected to run on Windows 8.
Windows 8 was the first version of Windows to bet heavily on the touch interface, and to attract as many manufacturing companies as possible, Windows RT, an optimized operating system for Tablets based on Windows 8 but limited to the Windows Store.
The Nokia Mercury, however, should deliver the full power of Windows 8, although today's leaks suggest that performance wasn't really the manufacturer's focus. A screenshot reveals that the device is powered by an Intel Atom Z3795 chip running at 1.6GHz coupled with 2GB of RAM.
The tablet's design is nothing special. It essentially looks more like a larger Lumia phone, which is not surprising since Nokia itself designs the Lumia series. The device is pictured in orange, but there are likely other color options like white and black.
We find two cameras with front and rear facing as well as a SIM tray that allows for LTE connectivity. There are no details on the battery or storage capacity of the tablet but it was expected to have 32GB of storage.
Of course, the Nokia Mercury will never see the light of day and we will never know why Microsoft made this decision. Most likely, it was all due to the fact that it would not bring anything new to the market.
