Apple beats Microsoft in the browser race

It's no secret that Microsoft's Edge has yet to gain traction, with most users saying that the best browser to download is Google Chrome, but new statistics provided by StatCounter for the month of June show that the application has bigger problems than initially thought.

Microsoft

First of all, market shares. StatCounter says Google Chrome ran on 62.23 percent of desktop last month, followed by Firefox with 13.98 percent.

The dying Internet Explorer is in third place with 9.28 percent, but its market share is expected to continue to decline, not only because Microsoft is pushing Windows 10 users hard to use Edge, but also because new features are not planned.

And here's the interesting part. Apple's Safari, which is only available on MacOS, with no Windows version currently maintained, is next, with Microsoft's Edge just 3.89 percent.

This is despite the aggressive Windows 10 push that includes pop-ups and toast notifications that appear on Windows 10 systems to promote Edge, and furthermore despite the "accidental" upgrades to the new operating system that occurred in the first 12 months after launch.

The numbers are even more bizarre when it comes to the market shares of the systems running these browsers. Windows currently has an 84.32 percent market share, while Apple's OS X is said to run on 11.59 percent of computers worldwide. So Safari having a larger market share than Edge is certainly unexpected.

On the other hand, this makes some sense, as the majority of Apple users are stuck with Safari for browsing, while for Windows, most adopt the switch to Chrome or Firefox. This is because Apple's browser offers good performance on Mac systems, so only a few users feel the need for a third-party application. Microsoft has failed to do this so far, but the company is promising that Edge will get better with future updates.
