Microsoft has just started rolling out the Teams app, a Slack competitor, through its Office 365 subscription globally.
The service was announced at the end of 2016 and aims to offer an instant chat app to every workplace that will work seamlessly with Office and threaded messaging (something Slack can't do yet).
Today's release comes with a few new features, like audio calling from mobile devices and video calling from Android (iOS and Windows Phone coming soon). You can also email an entire channel, send messages using markdown formatting, and get notifications for all posts made to a channel.
Microsoft has indeed released a video with some of the new features that are available from the service announcement.
We should note that Slack has been the dominant company in the space for quite some time now, and it has the advantage that its platform is stable and highly agnostic. However, it is not connected to Office, Google Docs, or any other service.
Microsoft, on the other hand, states that it does not want Teams to become a solution that is addressed exclusively only to Office users, but that it is open for integration into any services you want.
