The 2017 Oscars are just a few days away – which means moviegoers are locking in their predictions, nominees are putting the finishing touches on their red carpet looks, and we're ready to name the most popular movie trailer on YouTube.
Can we have the folder, please..
YouTube ’s special edition “ Movie Trailers Leaderboard ” ranks the most popular trailers for the Best Picture nominees, including both the production companies’ official channels and popular trailer collection and reposting channels. This year, the 9 trailers are all blockbusters, garnering up to 3 million hours of viewing . 1 That’s on par with the nearly 26 million views of the Oscar-nominated short film, “Borrowed Time.”
The most popular trailer was revealed literally at the last minute. And the winner is… “La La Land” which won 1stplace , followed by “Arrival” and “Hacksaw Ridge” 1. You can see how the other Best Picture nominees fared on Think with Google .
The "world" of movies on YouTube
While the 2017 Oscars Best Picture nominations span a wide range of genres, superhero trailers are the most viewed, according to new research into the world of movies on YouTube from partner ad platform Pixability. They have the highest average views per video2, while superhero, animation and sci-fi trailers account for 74 of the 100 most viewed trailers2.
Pixability research also records that while trailers are the most popular type of film content on YouTube2, songs (whether official music videos or fan creations) are the type of film content with the most interaction3. Musicals, therefore, such as “La La Land” are currently in their prime and YouTube viewers are humming along to its melodies.
Case in point: "La La Land" is edging out the competition in the 2017 Oscars nominees for Best Original Score, with over 1 billion views on YouTube of its music and clips from the film and fan covers4.

Google News Lab looked at trailer trends from a completely different angle: geography. Think you can guess which movie trailers were most popular on the US coast? West Texas? The Northwest? Take a look.
Before the winner is crowned on Sunday, make some popcorn and don't forget to check out all the top trailers for the Best Picture nominees on Think with Google.
