Researchers find way to protect quantum networks from hackers

Chinese researchers have discovered a way to protect quantum computer networks (based on the principles of quantum physics and offering a new way of managing information in terms of encryption and transmission (speed) but also the detailed management of photons) from external attacks. They have managed to build the first high-dimensional quantum cloning machine capable of quantum hacking to intercept a secure quantum message.

Researchers at the University of Ottawa published their research in the journal Science Advances, which explained that both traditional and non-traditional computers that use quantum computing are vulnerable to hacking.

Ebrahim Karimi from the University of Ottawa, Canada, said: "Our team has built the first large-scale quantum cloning machine capable of performing quantum hacking to intercept a secure quantum message."

"When we were able to analyze the results, we discovered some very important elements for protecting quantum computer networks against potential hacking," Karimi added.

Until now, it was believed that quantum systems were completely secure for transmitting data, but after this research, it raises questions.

"What we found was that when larger amounts of quantum information are encoded in a single photon, the replication will get worse and hacking is even easier to accomplish," added Frederic Bouchard, a doctoral student at the University of Ottawa.

"We have shown that cloning attacks introduce specific, observable noises into a secure quantum communication channel. Securing photons that contain the largest amount of information possible and monitoring these noises in a secure channel will help strengthen quantum networks against potential hacking threats," Bouchard added.
