Back in 2014, Google bought Titan Aerospace, a company that specializes in building high-altitude solar-powered drones. Since then, the company has been working on a program to use drones to provide internet to remote areas of the world. Although it seemed far-fetched, this could be the beginning of an era where drones flying in the air could provide internet to millions of people living in isolated areas. But it would also offer a solution to other problems, such as avoiding disasters and ecological damage such as deforestation.
However, it seems that now, this program has stopped.
In 2015, Google placed their Titan Division into the program in their X division as part of the restructuring with their parent company Alphabet. However, that year the Titan team experienced a failure, when one of its drones fell into the Arizona desert due to a problem with the wings.
Now, according to a recent report, the Google Drone program has now been shut down and Google is moving the approximately 50 engineers who were working on the project to other parts of the company, as revealed in a statement from the company itself.
The company, however, appears to continue working on its Project Loon, which uses balloons to provide Internet access to remote areas of the planet.
