Dell EMC cloud, software and systems improvements

Dell EMC recently announced new products and services in high performance computing ( HPC ), cloud , software , systems and successful customer applications, continuing its focus on democratizing HPC to more enterprises of all sizes, optimizing HPC technology innovations and advancing the HPC community .

“The global HPC market is expected to exceed $30 billion in 2016 for all spending on products and services, including servers , software , storage, cloud and other categories, with growth estimated at a 5.2 percent compound annual growth rate ( CAGR ) through 2020,” said Addison Snell , CEO , Intersect 360 Research . “Strengthened by the combination with EMC , Dell will hold the leadership position in overall HPC revenue share as we move into 2017.”Dell EMC

Democratizing HPC to expand capabilities in enterprises

Dell EMC , as a global leader in high-performance computing, continues to deliver HPC capabilities to a wide range of businesses, and in this context, announces:

  • The Dell EMC HPC System for Life Sciences , which will be available with the PowerEdge C 6320 p Server , powered by Intel® Xeon Phi ™ processors by early Q1 2017 , accelerates results for bioinformatics centers that aim to identify treatments within clinically defined timelines while protecting confidential data.
  • New cloud acceleration services from Cycle Computing that advance cloud service orchestration and management by connecting to three of the largest public cloud infrastructure platforms , Azure , AWS and Google . This allows customers of all scales to efficiently utilize their on-premises systems while simultaneously having unified access to vast public cloud resources for their HPC needs .
  • Dell EMC is offering Intel®HPC OpenHPC Orchestrator to customers this quarter to help simplify the deployment, management and ongoing maintenance of HPC systems . Intel® HPC Orchestrator , based on , an open source project , can help accelerate customers’ time to results and the value they derive from their HPC deployments .

Optimizing the HPC portfolio for performance and efficiency

Dell EMC , a global leader in server , enterprise-class storage and converged infrastructure, provides a robust portfolio optimized for HPC , available in a single package. New examples of innovative HPC technology are being showcased at SC 16, including:

  • Dell EMC PowerEdge C730 4130 and R100 servers are now NVIDIA®Tesla available™ Pdesigned with accelerators , to increase data throughput and save money for HPC and very large data centers , advancing intensive deep learning applications and applying artificial intelligence techniques, aiming to advance scientific achievements.
  • The announcement about the University of Pisa using Dell EMC PowerEdge C4130 servers , with NVIDIA Tesla P 100 accelerators and NVIDIA Deep Learning GPU Training System ( DIGITS ), for deep learning and DNA sequence classification applications .
  • The additions of Dell EMC Isilon , DSSD , ScaleIO and Elastic Cloud Storage ( ECS ) to the expanded HPC portfolio , further accelerating storage and cloud utilization capabilities for HPC customers .

Empowering the HPC and helping customers accelerate the pace of innovation

The MIT Lincoln Laboratory Supercomputing Center (LLSC) has selected Dell EMC to deploy a 648-node HPC system through the Dell EMC and Intel Early Access Program for the Intel® Xeon Phi ™ processor. LLSC ’s new “ TX - Green ” system , one of the largest of its kind on the East Coast, exceeds one petaflop , allowing the center to quadruple its computing capacity.

The new HPC system provides LLSC researchers and collaborators with a very significant increase in the center's capabilities, with regard to interactive and on-demand large-scale data analysis capabilities, with application in research in scientific fields such as space observation, robotic vehicles, cybersecurity, machine learning, sensor processing, electronic devices, bioinformatics and air traffic control.

University Peking has selected Dell EMC to deploy two HPC clusters to advance cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EMUniversity Harvard. The systems feature 144 nodes and approximately 2 petabytes of storage with Intel EE Lustre, allowing university researchers to map the 3D structure of biological macromolecules, with the goal of designing inhibitors and developing new drugs that will lead to the treatment of patients suffering from cancer and other diseases.
