The video site, DailyMotion was hacked, resulting in 85 million user accounts being stolen.
The video sharing website DailyMotion, which is one of the largest video sharing and streaming platforms on the Internet, is reported to have been breached. The hack on DailyMotion was announced by the breach reporting service LeakedSource on Monday, which reported that the data of 85 million users was stolen by unknown hackers.
LeakedSource revealed that hackers stole 85,200,000 account details including names, email , and passwords.
LeakedSource, which provides an easy-to-use database of user data leaked in various hacks, has added the stolen data from the video sharing website to its search index. Since it opened, the site has added almost 3 billion breaches to its database.
The hacking possibly took place on October 20, which means the stolen data has been in circulation for a while, according to LeakedSource.
Passwords are protected with the Bcrypt hashing algorithm, with 10 rounds of the registry keys. Over 18 million DailyMotion entries have such a password, making it difficult to crack compared to those that use SHA1 or MD5.
ZDNet also confirmed that the data came from the website , but representatives for Vivendi, the majority owner of Paris-based DailyMotion, did not respond to requests for comment.
The damage is somewhat limited for DailyMotion users, as only a portion of the accounts had passwords that leaked, due to password security. However, this could be a good opportunity for those 18 million users whose passwords were leaked, to change their password and on other services that use the same one.
