Why did Microsoft stop releasing new builds?

Microsoft is reportedly temporarily suspending the release of new builds of Windows 10 for those enrolled in the Fast and Slow Rings as the development team internally tests the new Unified Update Platform, a new update delivery system.

Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider program, said they plan to test the new UUP system internally before rolling it out to Insider users. But no one knows how much it will cost them.windows-10-unified-update-platform Microsoft

What's important to know is that Windows Insiders will no longer be able to download new builds to their personal computers. Mobile users are not affected.

"We are preparing to release PC builds to Insiders using UUP. To prepare for this, we will be pausing all updates in Fast and Slow rings starting tonight (Friday 12/2/16)," Dona said.

What is UUP?

As we mentioned in an earlier post, it is a new update system that speeds up checks and dramatically reduces data size by downloading the files you need, rather than the full new builds.

This will make major updates to the operating system much faster, as Microsoft says that each of your computers will only receive the files that have changed since the previous version, not the entire operating system. In addition, checking for updates will be done on the server side, so it will be faster.

Microsoft's new UUP system will be tested with Insiders over the coming months. Everyone else will get it with the upcoming Creators Update in early 2017.
