Studies have shown that iPhones are the smartphones most preferred by teenagers, but a 15-year-old girl from Morfa Bychan, near Porthmadog, in north Wales certainly thinks differently.
Her bedroom burned down after her iPhone caught fire while it was charging overnight on her bedside table. It appears the iPhone exploded due to overheating, causing a massive fire that completely destroyed the bedroom.
The damage extended to other parts of the house, partly due to water from firefighters battling to stop the blaze. The downstairs rooms have flooded and the family will not be able to live in the house for the next six months.
Caitlin Rae Durant explains that her iPhone was charging with a genuine Apple, but there is currently no information on which iPhone model caused the fire.
It's not yet clear whether Apple is investigating the incident, but it makes sense that it is, especially since it appears that one of its devices caused the fire. The family has not said anything about contacting Apple and it is not yet known whether they will seek compensation from the company.
"Despite the fact that the fire was limited to one room, the subsequent damage is enormous, we may well have lost all our belongings. The house needs a complete renovation and we would not be able to live there for the next six months," the mother explained.
Fire chiefs decided to release photos showing the aftermath of the fire, in an effort to highlight the dangers of leaving your phone plugged into the charger for longer than necessary and unattended.
