The short, explosive life of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 came to an abrupt end this week, when Samsung issued a second recall for all devices and temporarily halted their production.
But many of the phones are already out there, and Samsung and the government are trying to minimize the potential risks associated with using the phone. To that end, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and PHMSA have announced an emergency order banning all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones from all flights in the United States , Bloomberg reported.
Update: It's official! The ban went into effect on October 15. Passengers who try to take their Samsung Galaxy Note 7 on a plane may have it confiscated or be fined. Also, those caught carrying the phone in checked baggage may be charged with a criminal offense, in addition to the fine.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also recommends that devices not be turned on, charged, or placed in checked baggage on airplanes. The FAA did not completely ban the use of the defective devices, while allowing the use of replacement models that are expected to fix the problem. The new ban applies to both original and replacement models, regardless of whether they are turned off. If you are traveling and have made the rash decision to keep your phone, this is yet another reason to take advantage of the discount that Samsung is offering to all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 owners who want to exchange their defective model for another.
Samsung initially recalled 2.5 million Notes worldwide in September. The recall was caused by faulty batteries, but Samsung has yet to make an official statement about the problem with replacements. Theories have blamed either the battery or the very fast charging mechanism. The recall is expected to cost Samsung at least $5.3 billion!
