Google could replace the Nexus brand name for its smartphone series with the Pixel and Pixel XL, Android Police reports, following rumors that surfaced earlier this week that Google would drop the Nexus name.
The Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones are believed to be manufactured by HTC and HTC will not have branding on the devices. Details of the Pixel and Pixel XL were leaked earlier but under the codenames Sailfish and Marlin.
Both devices could be unveiled at a Google event on October 4, along with DayDream VR and an Amazon Echo competitor.
The Sailfish, or Pixel, is believed to be a 5-inch device with a rounded design. The Marlin, or Pixel XL, is believed to be a 5.5-inch device. Internally, the devices will feature quad-core Qualcomm processors, 4GB of RAM, and 12-megapixel cameras. The Pixel XL will have a larger battery.
The Pixel and Pixel XL are expected to arrive alongside the announcement of Android 7.1, adding VR support for its DayDream platform. Google, meanwhile, has yet to announce anything.
So it's unclear whether Google will drop the Nexus brand name altogether.
