Security researcher Michael Gillespie has created a decryption tool (or Decrypter) that can recover files locked by the MicroCop Ransomware, without paying a ransom.
The MicroCop Ransomware appeared towards the end of June and had two unique features that made it stand out from all other ransomware variants.
One of them is the ransom note which uses the Guy Fawkes mask, commonly used by Anonymous. The ransom note is written in a threatening tone and informs the user that they must return the money to someone who was allegedly robbed by Anonymous.
The second feature was the exorbitant amount of money he requested, which amounted to 48.48 Bitcoin, or around $32,000.
When Trend Micro security researcher Nyxbone discovered the presence of the new threat, three days later he managed to decrypt it.
You can download Decrypter from the link at the end of the post. Unzip the file and run the application. Decrypter will leave the original encrypted files in place, so as not to damage them in case something goes wrong.
Once the decryption is finished, it will notify you.
If you need help with Decrypter, you can contact Gillespie's forum where he provides technical support.
