Hoax: Because every reader gets the information they deserve

Hoax; How a true news story can become a hoax or otherwise a fraud? Today on almost all major news websites the main topic is the tiger or the cat of Crete. Let's see a little the information that is being spread…wild tiger

The news started from cretapost.gr and reports:

A disturbance has caused the residents of the Sitia region a reptile, which appeared and was observed moving mainly during the nighttime.

According to residents of the area, who happened to see it from a distance, it resembles a Cretan wildcat and is about one meter long.

Following these testimonies, men from the local police department together with area residents have spent the last hours hunting... the wild animal, which has caused terror as it passes.

As expected, the residents have been terrified, even at the mere idea that a wild animal is roaming among them, fearing to even go to their fields.

Immediately afterwards the copy paste began. However, it is not a faithful copy paste as we have discovered there are also the “sauces.” The term hoax goes to the sauces naturally:

Proto Thema, for example, besides the article, added a video and also an image that shows something very different from the animal it describes:

gatos HoaxSo let's look at the rare video that has previously recorded a Cretan wildcat that, according to testimonies, resembles the feline of Sitia.

The following video appeared on YouTube in 2013 and refers to a Pallas cat or Otocolobus manul and the environment in which the video was shot is from a zoo. The Pallas cat lives in the mountains of central Asia, no relation to Crete…

The video, however, appealed to a Greek “nature lover”, he downloaded it, changed the title and re‑uploaded it to YouTube with the title:

Rare video of the Cretan wild cat

Then the First Topic arrived… after that the bees came…

Tip: Read the comments on the video

If, however, you want to see the real wild cat from a photo that exists in the Museum of Natural History of Crete, see the image below:
