A hospital in the United Kingdom hopes to become the first to broadcast a cancer surgery online in virtual reality.
On April 14 at 4:00 PM (Greece time), Barts Hospital, Mativision and Medical Realities will broadcast an online cancer surgery, allowing viewers to explore the operating room as if they were actually there.
If you want to watch the operation, all you need to do is head over to their website, where at the time of writing there was a clock counting down to the broadcast’s zero hour. There you can download either the simple smartphone app without the use of VR or the Google Cardboard app. The team recommends using Google Cardboard for a full virtual reality experience, but you can also just use your browser.
Dr Ahmed, who will lead the surgical team, previously livestreamed a surgery using Glass in 2014. He is an advocate for using these types of technology for global medical education.
The patient who has agreed to the public broadcast of the operation has colon cancer, is 70 years old and says he is excited about the event.
