Nintendo's first mobile game looks like a chat app

Following rumors yesterday about Nintendo's intention to move into the mobile gaming space, the company reiterated during an interview with its investors that it will produce five smartphone applications that will be released within the next two years.

Nintendo Switch

According to a blog post from the Wall Street Journal, the first of these is expected to be released early next year.

It will be called “Miitomo,” a free app that will allow users to create their own “Miis”—the personal digital avatars that populate Nintendo. It doesn’t sound like much of a game. It also appears to be a chat program, or something else, centered around the idea of different Miis connecting and communicating.

Whatever “Miitomo” actually is, players will have to wait a little longer than expected to see it. It was originally planned to be released by the end of this year, but Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima – who took over after the death of his predecessor Satoru Iwata – decided to wait until after the holidays to promote the game.
